Virginia ‘Steph’ Donalds of The Playground recently sat down with rising star out of Florida, Seddy Hendrinx to talk about his recent project Sayless, his involvement with Generation Now, and big plans for 2021.
Seddy Hendrinx has come a long way since his career began in Jacksonville, Florida. After the loss of his best friend in 2016, Hendrinx found an outlet for himself and his loved ones in music, and he began to work at it full time. Inspired by musical trailblazers like Lauryn Hill, Andre 3000, and Chief Keef he began to find a voice for himself in the music. This voice resonated with listeners all around the world, and eventually made it to the ears of hip-hop moguls DJ Drama and Don Cannon - who signed him to their hugely innovative and influential Atlantic Records imprint, Generation Now.
Since joining the powerhouse roster alongside Lil Uzi Vert and Jack Harlow, Hendrinx has toured with big names like Wiz Khalifa, Moneybagg Yo, Chevy Woods and of course DJ Drama. Since signing, he’s released two projects and a consistent stream of well-received singles. Both of his 2020 projects have received great responses and they help to show his development both musically and personally. His May project B.H.D (Black Hearted Demons) was a very raw piece of work that welcomed everyone into the good, the bad and the ugly of Hendrinx’s mind. His most recent project Sayless takes a more accepting and focused stance, emphasizing that nothing is going to slow him down.
“I wouldn't say it's too different because I try to make all my tapes like a catalog that all fit, but I’d say it was just another brick added to the house. I was going to put out another tape Rhythm and Gangsta, but when I got the call about changing these songs and producers - I just said say less and decided to just give ‘em seven songs, so it’s say less.”
Hendrinx has been very consistent with releases in 2020, and each of his new songs display a new side of him and his creativity. He emphasizes his brick by brick mentality, moving with a pace but making sure everything he does is solid before moving onto the next. This drive and mentality has allowed him to step into many areas of the scene and create new fans in every one.
“I drop jewels in almost every song, it depends on what area you go in. My music is soulful reality street music. And I get geeked too, I make music for the geekers so I got rhythm and gangsta, autotune, R&B and every genre. It all fits though, it don't sound like he just hopping from genre to genre and he’s just trying, my music sounds authentic and genuine.”
This versatility, work ethic, and consistent yet versatile style has led him to relationships with some of the greatest names in hip-hop today, and it showed when Sayless released. The project is stacked with features from chart-toppers including Gunna, G Herbo, labelmate Jack Harlow, and 24hrs - not to mention an expertly paired A Boogie feature on standout track, “45” feat. A Boogie wit da Hoodie. In our interview, Seddy was sure to point out that all of the features on his projects come as a result of genuine relationships, and that he’s grateful for the experience he’s gained working with some of today’s best.
“It’s a blessing. I been had the A Boogie feature. Every feature on my tape I been had except Herb and Gunna, but Cannon kinda put them two together. I ain’t pay nobody for no feature on my tape, they just worked on it with me, so it was a blessing just working and grinding sticking with it.”
While Sayless is still bubbling, Hendrinx has no plans of slowing down in 2021. Through each release he has built bigger and better relationships, and he is excited to expand his content and reach, brick by brick of course.
“For 2021, Big ol’ videos man. Working with some big big producers, some huge directors, and yeah man it's gonna get even bigger. It’s that brick by brick mentality so I don't wanna speak too much but I just keep the brick by brick mentality.”
None of these opportunities came easily to Hendrinx, and he remains humble through it all. He emphasizes the importance of focus and belief, and he says with that combination anything can happen.
“Brick by brick mentality. Never stop. Have faith. Believe in what you believe in - it all can happen.”
For now, Hendrinx plans to keep his foot on the gas in the studio and create a strong visual presence with the help of some elite company - starting with his latest single ‘Heart Safe’ feat. Kirko Bangz. He has made incredible strides in 2020, and he looks forward to showing his fans his creative side this year. If this year is anything like his last, expect Seddy Hendrinx to continue the winning streak in 2021.
